"Gyuudon,"
which turns up in anime and manga occasionally, is translated
as "beef bowl." When I looked up the kanji,
I found that it actually means... cow bowl. Close enough,
ne?
Ingredients:
A pound of beef 1 white onion 1 1/3
cup of dashi stock 5 tbsp of soy sauce 3 tbsp
of mirin 2 tbsp of sugar Rice
Cook the rice according to the usual directions.
You can make the rest of this dish while that's cooking
on the back burner.
Cut the onion into thin slices and cut the beef
into bite-sized pieces. Mix the dashi, soy sauce, sugar,
and mirin in a deep pan or wok. Bring it to a simmer,
then add the onion slices and cook covered for
a few minutes. Add the beef and simmer a few minutes
more. Serve over the rice.
This will create a lot of liquid. I've found that
this stuff is good over rice (though that's a bit wet
& sloppy for the usual bento box) and is also
good for marinating tofu and other stuff.
